Tourney Update

Posted on Aug 03, 2009
Sportsman's started off hot but one big inning killed us and we fell short of the 4-peat and ended up in 3rd.

We got off to a fast start beating Lemay 3-1. The "Bookends" started the game off right getting the first 2 guys on and we had scoring opportunities every inning but Lemay played great defense catching numerous fly balls limiting us to 3 runs. John Worcester was cruising along until the 5th where Lemay put the pressure on by loading the bases and scoring a run with 1 out but we got out of it for a 3-1 win.

Next, we played Gateway and got on ex-Sportsman's pitcher Jake Moehlenbrock for 3 run in the first. Bob Sessler did the rest of the damage shutting them out teh rest of the way for a 3-0 win... then came the rain and over an hour delay.

When play resumed, we played So. St. Louis for a spot in the finals. So. St. Louis put 5 on the board in the first of a 3b & HR off John, who created bad juju by changing shirts & not listening to Sean Peters to do some sprints to get sweaty and warmed up. We could never erase the deficit. In the 4th, we came back to make it 5-4 of a Tyler Faulstitch 3-run bomb but got stopped in the last inning. So. St. Louis played 8 which we all thought would hurt them but they had a couple big catches earlier in the game and huge catch off a Andrew Yanick triple to stop a rally in its tracks.

Next, we had to wait for the loser's bracket to complete games. After the wait, we faced the young kids. They threw a young, lanky, pimple-faced, lefty against us, who had thrown over 13 or so innings earlier in the day, and he shut out out with his live fastball. The kids ended up scoring 2 in the 5th. We lost 2-0.

It was a good tourney and everyone did well from our team. Pat was all over the ball all day long and was a trooper behind the plate catching great all 4 games. Drew had like 3 triples and had another 3 caught. Crazy Mike did a great job leading off. Tyler made like 4 outs the whole tourney and hit a 3 run bomb. Brian had some big hits. Bobby dominated Gateway and kept us in the game against the kids. Sean had good crucial AB's and John cruised along except for that one crucial inning.

Biggest surprise of the tourney was Victor Beanblossom going 2 for 3 of Bob Sessler with RBI off a HBP in the 5th. Lookout Vic! Bobby wants revenge!!!!

Congrats to So St. Louis to winning their tourney and for putting a good tournament on.

Sportsman's will be back in 10' year to start their next 3-peat. No Doubt.
